  • Job Search Conversations

One of my key recommendations to job seekers is to phone recruiters and employers to discuss advertised roles before they apply (depending on available contact information). Nearly all of my clients ask – ‘but what do I say?!’ Making that first call can be difficult, but it can also help you ascertain whether the position in the right fit for you, whether you will be the right fit for the company, and also leave a lasting and positive impression with the hiring manager.

  • The Daunting Process of Searching for Work

The thing that seems to be consistent across all of my clients when it comes to job seeking, is the fear of having to get out there and promote themselves. Especially if their role has been disestablished – it can seem like a soul crushing, overwhelming task, to take a risk and have to ‘sell’ yourself to strangers, friends and ex-colleagues alike.  But often once people start having conversations about what they can do, and what they are looking for in a role, it is not nearly as overwhelming as it once seemed.

  • Managing Change

Most of my clients are dealing with some kind of change in their careers when they see me. This can range from coping with leaving the organisation they work for, through to moving jobs, having their job descriptions altered, or managing the loss of colleagues through redundancy.  Each of these clients take a different period to time to cope with change and start to put in place some strategies regarding the next steps.

  • Testing the Market

As a professional CV writer, in addition to creating LinkedIn profiles and cover letter documents for my clients, I do a lot of research on what recruiters and hiring managers want, the different expectations that different markets have, and general trends in what is aesthetically pleasing. I do this by talking to my networks and contacts within recruitment (and I have quite a few), in addition to getting feedback from HR managers, talking to clients who are hiring managers, and also researching online any new and innovative global trends.

  • Career Contemplation

For those of you taking a break over the Christmas period, it may be that you have put some time aside to think about your 2014 career (I always like to set my goals at this time of year too). To help you contemplate what this might look like for you I have put together some tips and ideas for ‘mulling over’.
